About

In 2016, UMBC was invited to join the Center for Integration, Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) network to expand and enhance professional development opportunities for graduate students and postdocs who desire to improve their teaching skills and prepare themselves as future faculty.

The CIRTL Network was established in 2006 by Howard University, Michigan State University, Texas A&M University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Vanderbilt University. CIRTL expanded to 23 institutions in 2012 and doubled in size in 2016 to include another 23 institutions. The CIRTL Network’s mission is to improve the STEM learning of all students at every college and university, thereby increasing the diversity in STEM fields and the STEM literacy of the nation. As part of the CIRTL Network, UMBC is building training in STEM fields by providing access to courses, materials, and activities to help train grad students and postdocs in teaching while encouraging them to approach their education as research.
